The Prado Museum invites the reader to get to know in depth the permanent collection of one of the most important art galleries in the world. In coffee table book format, it brings together in a single volume around 400 works that illustrate the evolution and artistic legacy of the museum, presented to the reader chronologically, from Roman sculptures to the last paintings of Sorolla, already in the early twentieth century.
The book proposes a dialogue between the most important artists and the masterpieces they created, how some inspired others of the same period or later, the existing links between genres and schools, for example between the Italian Renaissance and the Flemish, or between artists of the stature of Velázquez and Rubens, and so on.
It is through this constant dialogue between masters and works that this book shows us the evolution of art in paintings, drawings, sculptures and decorative arts. A valuable lesson in the history of art summarized in the Prado's collection, in turn shaped by the tastes of the Spanish Crown over several centuries of collecting.
