For the first time, this book offers an overview of the life and work of Pedro de Villafranca y Malagón (c. 1615–1684), whose unparalleled mastery of the burin was recognized with his appointment in 1654 as the king's engraver, a position held by no one else during the reign of Philip IV. His portraits bear a close relationship to those of Velázquez, as they display the artist's equal skill in capturing the character of his subjects. Apart from portraits of the monarch and his family, Villafranca produced more than 300 engravings—mostly book illustrations—but he also worked as a painter, art restorer, appraiser, and head of decorative programs.
